4 Days Pre-Detox

What to Expect:

“I'm savoring these last couple days of [insert favorite non-detox food]!”

As you start thinking about how your meals will change, you may find that you are enjoying your non-detox-approved foods. But by day 21, you won’t even miss them! Don’t worry, we’ll talk about how and when (and maybe why not) to reintroduce your favorites after the detox ends, to see how you feel eating them.

Today's Lesson:

Artificial sweeteners

A couple days back, we talked about forms of sugar you’ll find on ingredient labels, like syrups, molasses, malts, and more. But we also need to address artificial sweeteners. These include acesulfame potassium (also known as acesulfame K, Sweet One, Sunett), aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet), saccharine (Sweet’N Low), and sucralose (Splenda). Note that while green stevia is a natural sweetener, when a stevia-containing product is white or presented in blended forms (Truvia), it may present problems similar to those of artificial sweeteners and should be consumed with caution.

Artificial sweeteners may cause health problems, including but not limited to:

  • migraines and headaches
  • dizziness and poor equilibrium
  • convulsions and seizures
  • nausea and vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • fatigue and weakness
  • changes and mood
  • changes in vision
  • changes in heart rate
  • joint pain
  • memory loss
  • sleep problems and insomnia
  • hives and rashes
  • weight-loss resistance

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, I recommend kicking artificial sweeteners to the curb. And, since they’re out for your 21DSD, now’s the perfect time to quit them for good!

The Dish from Diane:

Remember when you dive into this detox that you are choosing this! When you interact with those around you who may not be supportive of it (because there’s bound to be someone!), keep a positive attitude. If you complain the entire time you’re on this program, what message does that send to your friends and loved ones who you were probably trying to encourage to do this program with you? You got it: not a good one. What’s more? When we tell ourselves a negative story, it becomes more and more true—so keep a positive mental outlook and your detox will go much more smoothly!

Today's Checklist:

  • Perform a final sweep of your fridge and pantry and double check for artificial sweeteners or other ingredients that are going to be offplan.
  • Log your food and, using yesterday’s lesson and the 21DSD Simple Swaps Guide*, begin thinking of 21DSD-approved food swaps that you might enjoy in place of some of what you ate.
